What is a gender-sensitive approach to livelihoods and why is it important?
Gender equality
Men and women have different roles and responsibilities in society, and they are affected differently by climate change. Women are more likely to face poverty and have less access to resources than men. They are also more likely to be affected by the impacts of climate change than men are.
Gender-sensitive livelihoods
Gender-sensitive livelihoods consider the different needs and experiences of women and men and promote equal opportunities for both. They ensure that women have access to the same resources and training as men and can participate fully in economic activities.
Note it!
Gender-sensitive livelihoods are important for several reasons:
- They help to reduce poverty and inequality. When women have equal opportunities to earn an income, they can improve their own lives and their families’ lives.
- Gender-sensitive livelihoods can help to promote sustainable development. When women are involved in decision-making about how resources are used, they are more likely to consider the long-term impact of their actions.
- Gender-sensitive livelihoods can help to build more resilient communities. When women and men work together to build a better future, communities are better able to withstand shocks and challenges.
Gender-sensitive livelihoods are essential for building a more sustainable and equitable future for all.
