Hello friends in our last class we were discussing about the SWOT analysis. The analysis of strengths, the weaknesses, the opportunities and the threats. In today’s class we will try to understand the concept of motivation with the help of a game. The name of the game we are going to play today is “Tossing the Ring”. The objectives with which we are playing this game is to understand the target setting behavior in task performance. Entrepreneur is expected to set the target standards for himself as well as he has to set good numbers of targets to achieve his objective. So how we set the targets and what are the prerequisite for setting the target that we will be understanding by playing this game. The second objective with which we are playing this game is to internalize the process of achievement motivation. So this is the concept that we have discussed in many context as far as the quality and various other context of an entrepreneur. So today we will be understanding what exactly Achievement Motivation is? To what extent you are motivated to extend the task and what are the factors which are responsible for your motivation. The third objective with which we will be playing this game is to understand and analyze the difficulties faced in undergoing the entire process, because the process of entrepreneurship is not an easy task so there are good numbers of difficulties that we will be coming across similarly, in this game also we will come across similar situations. So, with that we try to internalize the process. Now coming to the methodology. There is a peg placed in front of you at different distance levels. There are three levels that we have kept. In the first round of the game you can choose the distance level of your choice and you will have to toss the ring. Each one of you will get five round to toss and you can vary the levels in the first round and ultimately we will be looking at the how many rounds that you are getting the success. Maybe form distance level 1 you toss two rings, and from distance level two you may toss one ring and from distance level three you may toss another two rings that is up to you or you can go only one distance level for all the five rings. It is the choice is with you. In case of second round each and every participant will contribute Rs10/- those who are interested in participation. So you have invested Rs2/-for each round, you have five rounds with you. If you toss it from the first level you will get back your investment of Rs2 per round if you toss one ring from level 2 you will get back your investment along with some interest on that, i.e Rs 3 per round and if you toss it from 3 one successful round will fetch you Rs 4 per round. So, if you can toss all the five rings successfully from level three you can get back Rs 20 it means that you are doubling your investment of Rs 10.
Okay friends now we have the results with us. So in the objective we said that we are going to test our achievement motivation. But if you look at the results all of us made an attempt from level 1 only. It means our target setting behavior is also having good number of limitations. Even though there was an opportunity to select level 2 and 3 none of us could make any attempt to select these levels. Wherein by selecting these levels we would have demonstrated our achievement motivation and coming to the number of success that we are getting from first level only. None of us could achieve the target of tossing all the five rings. So, 3 of us could achieve only 2 and 2 of us only 3 and 1 could achieve only one success with these rounds. It means we are facing good number of problems in achieving our targets. But at no point of time we are not making any analysis what exactly those problems are and how can I overcome them. Coming to the level 2 wherein you are acting as an entrepreneur and you are making an investment for tossing the rings. Again, when we look in the results the participant 1 who could get the success of 2 in the first round could get success of only 1 that too when he changed the level from 1 to 2. It means he has exhibited certain amount of achievement motivation wherein he wanted to get back his investment of Rs 10 so to what extent that he can achieve that one that he made an attempt from level 2 but he could achieve only 1. All other attempts that he made from level 1 but he could not achieve any success here. Coming to the participant number 2 wherein he could get only one success in the first round but in the second round he got the success of 2. It means the moment I become a investor, I become an entrepreneur I become more conscious with my efforts. As, long as I am not investing anything I am playing it for pleasure so I mention not much about the success or failure. But the moment my investment is there I become very very serious so that is how the behaviour is demonstrated here. Then as far as the participant number 3 is considered she could get around success of 3 but in the 2nd round where her investment was there was no success at all. So, this type of behavior that we generally observe because we become easy prey to the social pressure, and we take all pressure on us and we start working for the success so then we will not achieve any success.
So that is what we discussed as a quality of an entrepreneur, the mental ability, the analytical ability. Here, we are not analyzing the outcomes but we are trying to be under pressure and when under pressure you cannot achieve success that’s what is being demonstrated here. Then as far as the participant number 4 is considered in the first round he could get the success of 3 but in the 2nd round it is only 1. Again the typical result of the outcome of the social pressure that we can say. So when we work under pressure we are going to be the losers. As far as the participant number 5 is considered, % and 6 they got the success of 2 tosses in the first round but when it comes to the second round so he could not get any success but the participant number 6 earlier it was 2 but now it became 3 similar to the participant number 2 here the success rate is comparatively high because I become more conscious and I make some deliberate efforts and that is how I am getting more success. So if you repeat the same event ones again the behavior is going to be something different. Why? Because we are already having certain amount of prior experience. That experience is going to make us to behave in a different manner. In the same way entrepreneur also learns from his own mistakes. So this is what we have already seen as the quality of an entrepreneur. So he goes on accumulating his experiences and he goes on gaining his experiences and that is how he became a most successful individual during his life. So in this activity he could learn how exactly achievement motivation works and what are the difficulties that we come across in achieving our task and how we are behaving with the pressure that we are getting from different corners of our society.
In our next class we will be discussing about how the innovations are generated and how they are incubated and how they are commercialized for the benefit of the public as well as for the benefit of an enterprise.
