Hello friends, in our last class we were discussing about role of ministry of micro small medium enterprise in the process of entrepreneurship. Wherein we could understand various aspects and various schemes launched by ministry for entrepreneurship development. In this class we will be playing a game and we will be learning some things associated with the entrepreneurship. The name of the game that we are going to have today is tower building. The objectives of this game include is the first one
– to understand the goal setting behavior in task performance, because you are expected to perform a particular task wherein you need to set the goal and what are the criteria that you take into consideration while setting the goal that will be part of this game.
The second objective is to internalize the process of helping behavior and its consequences on the performance, because as an entrepreneur you are expected to perform various tasks but alone individually it is very very difficult for you to accomplish that task and you need to take help from other units also and how it is going to be that will be experiencing with this game.
The third objective is to understand value orientation and its relation to entrepreneurial performance and the fourth one is to understand the factors in decision making. So what are the things that we take into consideration while taking the decision that also will be understanding. So this is for all the registered participants. What are things that you are going to observe from this event is the amount of time spent for decision making and who tries maximum to influence the process of decision making out of the three participants who are part of this game and how group is taking the decision so that you need to observe and agreement disagreement during the decision making process and the environment which is persisting there whether it was helping or it was encouragement or some other factors that you can observe. Then the confidence of direction, what sort of guidance by whom because of the three players, what is their level of involvement that will be observing and who gives maximum guidance and if anybody is taking to take over the game or influence the game much or whatever it is. Then what is the emotional reaction of the subject receiving the guidance because there are certain conditions. The person who is playing this game actually performing the action he is bit different condition so how he is getting the cooperation from others that will be observing. The then level of anxiety whether the participants are excited or that so that also you will be observing then the confidence of the worker and planning and searching environment that you will be observing through this game.
Then coming to the rules of this game. There are 3 participants who are playing this game. 1 will act as the manager. We have said that he is an associate member one and the second one is the associate number 2 or the assistant manager that becomes a and the person who performs the task is the entrepreneur or the subject. So the rules of the game include the person who is going to act as the entrepreneur he will be blindfolded and then you will set the target. You are going to build a tower it will be consisting of how many blocks. So with our past experience we can say that so in our previous experiences we went upto 15. You have 22 blocks with you so by using this 22 blocks so now you have to set the target to what extent you can decide. May be 10 or 15 or 14 or whatever it is. So then you will be allotted with a time of 5 minutes and in that 5 minute you are to complete the task with the help of 2 managers that is associate number one and associate number two who will be acting as the manager and the assistant manager. They are not blindfolded but the both members of the team are not supposed to touch any of the blocks, only they can guide you like you take this one, you go right, go left or whatever it is and the person who is acting as a entrepreneur is blindfolded and he is the only person who has to be involved in the process of construction of the tower. There is one more deviation which makes the role of an entrepreneur more difficult, that is the entrepreneur is supposed to use his wrong hand. If he is a right hander regularly he is supposed to use his right hand and if he is regular left hander then he has to make use of his right hand. And with this with the allotment of 5 minutes of time we will be beginning with this game.

Your time starts now. Your time is over now. So, what was the logic behind your target that you set in first round as 22. Sir, being an optimistic I hoped for 22, that why I answered 22. Okay now after having the outcome, the end result, so now what do you say about your own performance? So now are you realize that our target was not realistic or it is because of our mistakes we could not do that otherwise we could have achieve the target. They just start shaking so we are not able to make more than 10 blocks. Was there time limiting factor? No, not really because after 9 from my experience if you are giving us 10 minutes also I think achievement will be the same.
Your time starts now…..Time is over. So, now can you tell me there are sufficient resources with you, you had sufficient time as well as manpower with you but why did you stop. With our experience we had decided our target to be 9 and we know that it could have fallen if we go beyond the target so after going one block above my target as a team we decided to stop. Because I know it would fall I had a feeling that it would fall beyond that number.

Just before this round, we observed a round so, wherein we so completed the target, rather we achieved the target, about the target and one point 5 minutes means almost more than 90 second were left and the figure was same almost. But n this round the performance was very very less. This is what happens in our practical situation also.
Okay friends now we are ready with the results of round of this particular game.
So now we would like to observe these particular figures especially in case of first round. Where in you see the figure the target set by the person who was acting as an entrepreneur was 22. But one of his associate member he mentioned that target should be 12 and another member was highly enthusiastic to set the target of 21. But when they started discussions among themselves finally they came to the conclusion that our target is going to be 15 and you see the achievement it is 9. So, when we are over ambitious so then we are not able to reach those targets so this is what we are learning from this. This how we said about what exactly our target setting behavior. So when we set our target so how much amount of time that we are investing in taking that decision. Immediately it comes in mind. Okay I will go for this. But we should set our targets with some logical reasoning processes. When the same game was repeated by interchanging the roles so now you see the figures, what kind of changes that we can observe. The associate member move from 21 to 10 and 1 member who was acting as an entrepreneur in earlier case so now he took another role as an associate member 2 and she also reduce its target and their Consensus was 12 in the second round. But the achievement was only 4. So there are good number of factors that come in between, in setting the targets as well as in achieving the target. While setting the targets our priorities are something different. And the moment we enter into the entrepreneurial activities so then we start realizing that what are the problems that we are going to face. And in every attempt that we are making and in every new activity that we are taking up so it has its own different types of problem. It is not always that we are going to face with the same problem, all the time its going to be different because the situations change from time to time. The government rules and regulations are going to change from time to time. The resources availability changes from time to time. The human resources availability also changes from time to time and there are good numbers of environmental factors that come in between while taking the decision and achieving the target. Learning form the experiences of these earlier two batches the next round when we went for the targets were almost realistic that we can say. So there are no exorbitant figures ambitious figures as we observe in case of earlier cases so it is of around 10, 11, 9, 10 and ultimately the achieved was 12. So it was not that the entrepreneur should set lower target and achieve that one, we can say that it is a successful event, No. Just to share one of my experience while going through the game in one of my earlier batches, one of the group they set the target of two and I said that the time was 5 minutes and the resources are enough with you but they set the target of 2 and they said that sir we have completed our target. So what kind of conclusion we can derive out of this? Obviously, they had achieved the target and they had enough time as well as enough resources with them but they are not able to take any risk in that. Can we say that they are entrepreneurs? Is it an entrepreneurial behavior? Obviously NO. We can say that they are very good businessman because they are not taking any risk and this is what we said in our theory classes that entrepreneurs are going to create the needs and the businessman’s are going to satisfy the needs and the entrepreneurs are creating the path and the businessman are following the path and that is what is the behavior that we observe here also. If you targets are too high it means you are gambling, if your targets are too low it means you are not ready to take any risk and that is how we said that entrepreneurs are taking the calculated risk and that behavior we try to observe here in the form of setting the goals, in the form of achieving the target. And at the same the entrepreneur cannot achieve the targets whatever the consensus were there, he is not able to achieve the target without the cooperation of his associate members or who are acting as a managers, because he is blindfolded. The logic behind blindfolding the person who is acting as a subject or entrepreneur is. So the moment you enter into an entrepreneurial venture you are also going to face same situation because you are not aware of many things wherein, you need support from different directions and at the same time so what type of government rules and regulations are going to change at what point of time we are not aware of. So just to realize all these practical situations the subject was asked to be blindfolded.
With this we are learning from these experiences that with all these prerequisites we can take calculated risk to be successful entrepreneurs.
