Hello!! Friends in this class we will be discussing about the communication skills for an entrepreneur. During the discussions in many previous classes we had a reference to the concept of communication, communication ability and the various issues associated with the communication as per as the entrepreneurship is considered. Is it so important that for an entrepreneur to develop the communication abilities and is it that the entrepreneur is not having any communication skills. So there might be certain questions like this in our mind. It is true that we are all into the process of communication there in and there out. But what sorts of communication that we are doing and how we are doing that communication and how my receivers are perceiving the inputs and the outputs of my communication that becomes more important when you are acting as an entrepreneur. So, in this class we will be discussing various issues associated with the communication skills especially with from the point of view of entrepreneurs. As I said entrepreneur is a person who has to perform a diverse range of task for establishment, for runni ng as well as for achieving the success for his own organization that he has established in which he is going to play various roles and all these roles that he is going to perform invariably involve different communication skills. So how can we better understand these communication skills and the importance? Before exactly coming to that now let me discuss with you one of the most important issue associated with the communication that is Glossophobia. Glossophobia is a French term glossa means the tongue and phobia you are all aware of it is fear of something. Basically, the literal meaning of the term glossophobia is the fear of speaking or in medical terms we can say that it is nothing but the speech anxiety and as per the research outcomes it has been established that the fear of speaking or the speech anxiety is next to the fear of death. It means it is having that intense impact on each and every individual. You imagine the situation when you get an opportunity to address a group of people maybe in a classroom system. If your teacher asks you to give a presentation of not more than 5 minutes so then what are the things that you are going to face. So, that is what we will be discussing now.
The moment your teacher asks you to come and stand over the podium and deliver on the topic of your choice wherein you have enough amount of masterly over that topic but the basic issue is are you that efficient to deliver that topic before the group without any hesitation. That is way the concept of glossophobia comes into the picture. So the symptoms of this glossophobia include the intense anxiety prior to or simply at the thought of having verbal communication with any group. If we are into any informal discussion may be we are not feeling these types of symptoms. But the moment the situation becomes formal we start developing all these symptoms. We try to avoid that and we try to enter into the physical distress or nausea or feeling of panic in such circumstances. Why these things happen and how can we overcome these things? For that thing you need to identify the typical symptoms of that then you can easily overcome them.
So that is how we have classified symptoms into 3 groups. Number one is the physical symptoms, second one is verbal and third one is the non-verbal symptoms of glossophobia. We will discuss them one by one. To begin with the physical symptoms number one is acute hearing. The moment you enter into the process of public speaking or addressing a group of people maybe you are addressing anything wherein your elders are there, your juniors are there or maybe your colleagues are there you start this particular symptom that is acute hearing, you start listening very very less. At the same time your blood pressure and your heart beat are going to be increased. There are instances that wherein your blood pressure may raise up to 200 or more than 200 whatever it is. So these are some of the symptoms that we observed and then the increased perspiration, increase oxygen intake and the stiffening of neck or the upper back muscle and the most common symptom many of them face is the dry mouth. So, now what is the purpose behind identifying these symptoms and discussing with you all. So this is only one category of the symptom that I have said. Now this is the discussion on communication skills and the first issue that we have taken up is the glossophobia and these are the symptoms of glossophobia. Just by becoming aware of these symptoms you can start overcoming these things. In many instances it has been observed that a communicator is not at all aware of this particular symptoms as the symptoms of glossophobia. So that’s were major problem lies. The moment you become aware of the moment I start addressing the grow so my heart beat is increasing, my bloodpressure is increasing and my mouth is becoming dry and my muscles are getting stiffened or my oxygen intake is increasing or my perspiration is increasing, all these things the moment you start becoming aware of over a period of time you can overcome this things. The only way with which you can overcome these things is practice, practice, practice. And that is how you can develop you can sharpen your communication skills. But before that the most important thing is you need to be aware about the symptoms of the glossophobia.
The verbal symptoms include the tense voice. Most of the time we get tensed and accordingly that is reflected in our voice and at the same time our voice starts shaking but it is not normal process of communication. So that is what is the verbal symptom. And another important thing is the reduncies. Whenever we get an opportunity to address a group of people we start repeating certain words again and again and many times it is happening unknowingly. The speaker is not aware that he is speaking the same word again and again and in some cases they may repeat a particular word again and again. So under such circumstances we called as redundancy process so the you as a communicator you need to aware of this particular symptom yes now I am suffering from the symptom of redundancy so then you start avoiding that and over a period of time you can overcome that and again the only way of overcoming this symptom is practice, practice, practice. The third and the most important category of symptoms is the non verbal symptoms. In case of non verbal symptoms the most important thing is the moment we start communicating with a group is it that we are going to establish the eye contact with our listeners. You can observe your own behavior as well as your behavior with your friends or any person who is acting as a source in the communication process. In majority of the cases we try to avoid establishing the eye contact with the people and that is what is one of the important factors in effective communication. If you don’t establish the appropriate eye contact you cannot reconsider as a communicator. So that is the primary thing. So the moment you establish eye contact with your receivers the receiver will start developing a feeling that the communicator or the source is looking at me and whatever that he is uttering it is for me. Each one of the receiver is developing that type of feeling and that is what is very very important as per the communication process is considered. Maybe you are addressing a small gathering of 10 to 15 people as an entrepreneur and they are all your manager or assistant managers or whatever it is and when you establish eye contact with them so then you start feeling that each one of them maybe 10 or 15 or whatever is the number each one of them start feeling that my boss or my entrepreneur is looking at me and addressing at me. Each one of them are developing that. So that’s what is importance of establishing the eye contact. So after listening this particular thing you may make certain deliberate attempts of looking at the gathering and establishing the eye contacts many times we commit another mistake what is that one so we are partial to one or two individuals in the group. We may look at because the communication expert has said that you have to establish eye contact and that is how I am establishing eye contact with may be 1 or 2 people or one corner in the group that I am addressing and many times it happens that there are every possibilities of sending the wrong messages because of this behavior. It is part of your non verbal communication so that is how being careful about your non verbal communication part also. And how can you overcome this thing this thing again the only thumb rule is practice, practice, practice. With these symptoms of non glossophobia and the ways to overcome these symptoms, so now let us move on to the misconceptions about the communication.
So in the process of communication there are some issues wherein we are carrying certain misconceptions let me clarify all those things one by one. The first misconception is the meanings are in words. The moment we feel that meanings are in words it means we are grossly mistaken. The communication science say that meanings are in people not in words because it depends on how the listener is going to understand what you have been said. May be you are telling
It with some intention but he is understanding it in a different perspective it means there is difference in the levels of understanding the same concept in a different way. And that is how the concept of communication gap has emerged basically it is the difference between what has been said and what has been understood. So how to reduce this communication gap is by understanding the basic issue that meanings are in people rather than words and we need to develop appropriate understandings about the issues that has been discussed and that is how we can overcome that.
Then the second one communication is a verbal process. Obviously, it is a verbal process but it is only true to the extent 50%. As, I have already said communication is both verbal as well as non verbal process. So, what we say verbally by creating various sounds is equally important how we are telling that. Whatever it may be related to your facial, your body posture, gesture, movements of the hands, establishing eye contacts, all these things are part of your effective communication that is how it is not only the verbal process it is non verbal process also. The third one is telling is communication. It is only half way of communication because how your receivers are perceiving that also is very very important. The fourth one is communication will solve all your problems. Obviously, communication has that potential but at the same time be careful that communication can create the problems also. If you are aware of only one part of this or one meaning of this again there might be good number of problems that we may face with. That is how we need to understand that also it has the potential of creating the problem also. Then communication is a good thing. Basically, we say that communication is a tool. When we say that it is a tool it can be used for good or it can be used for bad. So let us be careful about making use of communication as a tool. The sixth one is the more communication the better. But the communication science says that the quantity does not matter but the quality does. What does it mean? To be a good communicator it is not that how many words per minute I am speaking and with what speed that I am speaking, it is not at all an important issue. But how many ideas that I am trying to communicate in one minute or per minute so that I am giving something new for my receiver and that is what is important here and that is how we can say that the more the better is a misconception. Communication can break down. If we don’t like something or if you are angry on somebody else we stop talking to him or we don’t communicate with him. Thus, it at any point of time means that there is breakdown in communication. Communication can never break down. So that is how communication science says that one cannot communicate, it means it is continuous process, it is a never ending process. It cannot breakdown. There might be a possibility that may be either successful or unsuccessful. The process of communication either it is successful or unsuccessful but it cannot breakdown and the last one is communication is a natural ability. So this type of thing that we carry in some cases, he is a born singer, he is a born communicator, he is a born speaker so these are some of the things that we carry. But at the same time we can acquire this skills of communication also because we said that communication is a skill. Well it is a skill it can be acquired. Over a period of time we can develop we can sharpen our communication skills and that is how we can improve upon our overall impression in the society. With this we are coming to the end of the first part of discussion on communication skills. In the next part of discussion on communication skills we will be discussing about the importance of listening and the precautions that we need to take before the presentation and how we are going to develop the communication perception.
Thank You.
